SUE SCOTT

A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION

Sue joined the cast of A Prairie Home Companion in 1992 and for 24 years she performed, “live on the air,” private eye girlfriends, smoky waitresses, well-meaning mothers, etc. The scripts written for the cast each week were inventive, creative and appreciated by the national audience. Over the decades, Sue enjoyed performing in venues as small as Yellowstone National Park (audience: 400) and as large as the Hollywood Bowl (audience: 18,000.) For more than a dozen summers, Sue performed and traveled the world on APHC charted cruises with delightful radio show fans.

Here’s one of my early memories of Prairie Home. During a Friday night rehearsal, we were reading through the potential scripts for the show the next day. One character Garrison had created for me was described as “statuesque.” I made a choice for a voice that I thought might work. We started reading and very quickly Garrison said to me, ‘Let me stop you. I think she’s taller than that.’ I lowered my voice. He nodded and the read-through continued. It was at that moment that I realized this radio acting is a whole different animal. Of course, since that rehearsal years ago, I’ve run into countless “statuesque” women with high little voices…!

Sue Scott has taken her talents from the stage to the airwaves doing “funny voices on the radio” with A Prairie Home Companion since 1992. A vocal talent without compare, at any moment she can be garrulous, gracious, sassy, sinful, prim and proper, worldly and wise.

Sue Scott: Seriously Silly collects the best of Sue Scott, as if such a thing were possible. Here’s Sue as Mom calling her beleaguered son Duane. As Ruth Harrison, Reference Librarian, with her black belt in biblio-kwon-do. As devastatingly beautiful supermodel Cynthia Maxwell. As private eye Guy Noir’s faithful ex-girlfriend, Sugar. As an NPR correspondent. A waitress named Vi. A blonde. A bird. Berniece. Radio starlet Lulu Lane, and more.
